Making parity a reality requires changes to the status quo.



Novato teachers' total compensation averages 5.7% below average comparable districts:
Entry level 1.3% = $641 deficit
BA + 60 Step 10 4.6% = $3,034 deficit
Maximum Step and Class 7.1% = $5,753 deficit

In 1990 NUSD teacher salary was comparable at BA + 60 Step 10.
Non-management certificated salaries are underfunded :
2005-2006 by $1.8 million
2006-2007 by $ .95 million


NUSD simply can't continue with business as usual and keep quality teachers and programs given the vagaries of public revenues. It is of utmost importance that we have a long range plan which would include a Parcel Tax renewal, but also have a distinct and articulated direction about how the District will move forward in a proactive, rather than reactive mode. It is an historical fact in Novato is that teachers' salaries have borne the brunt of specialized programs . Creative problem-solving and consensus building is needed now. All stakeholders need to keep in mind what is really good for kids. We have no time to waste.
